Jones Memorial

Commonly asked questions • 2021

How long am I able to use the building?

Unless another event is scheduled, you may use the building all day. If you have reserved the chapel for a wedding, you may use the chapel the evening before for a rehearsal of the ceremony. Remember that if you have rented only the chapel, you may not turn on the thermostat and use the basement, too. If you intend to use the basement for anything, even if it’s just a staging area, you need to pay the rental for it, as well.

Will any other events be scheduled in the building the day I have it rented?

It is possible. If you want to ensure that there is no event in the basement when you are having a wedding in the chapel, you should reserve the basement, too. The museum operates independently and may be open, as well. Sometimes there also are events going on at the Adamson Cabin, which shares the same parking lot as Jones Memorial and the museum.

When can I get the key?

If no other event is scheduled, you can normally pick up the key a day or two before a weekend wedding so that you can do your cleaning and decorating ahead of time. Remember that you are responsible for the building, and you are responsible for seeing that the doors are securely locked each time you leave.

How many people will the chapel and basement hold?

The chapel is designed for 165; but 155 is more realistic.

The basement is designed for approximately 200; but that would be pretty crowded.

Are there tables and chairs?

There are 18 eight-foot tables. There are approximately 150 chairs.

Please take them down and stack them after you are finished with your event.

Is there a sound system available?

No.

What about cleaning?

Jones Memorial has no employees, no maintenance staff, not even a dumpster. It is completely self-service. That means you are dependent upon the previous renter for how clean you find it. You may have to clean before your event; you definitely will have to clean afterward. You even need to haul off your own trash. You should find extra trashbags underneath the bags in each trashcan. There is a vacuum cleaner in the closet.

What about snow removal?

You will need to arrange any snow removal, etc., yourself.

Where are the lights to the parking lot?

The switches are on the east wall of the furnace room (behind the boiler). They are labeled.

Can I serve alcohol, or at least use it for a toast?

No. Jones Memorial has a firm policy of no alcohol. Smoking is also not allowed.

Can I bring my dog inside the building?

Unless it is a licensed service dog, no.

Can our guests visit the museum?

The museum is normally open 1-4 p.m. Sundays, from Memorial Day Weekend through October. If you are interested in having it open the day of your wedding, contact Lawrence County Historical Society (lawrencecountyhistoricalsociety@yahoo.com) to see if volunteers might be available. Admission to the museum is free; however, donations are welcome.
